Red House Painters has grown to be a cult group and one of 4AD's most beloved artists in the years that have passed since their debut. Drop: a reverb-drenched six-song debut
Red House Painters had only been formed one year before their debut album, 'Drop'. This six-song LP was full of reverb and reminded me of an early C100 Memorex cassette. Although the songs were a little too fast, they had a good feel to it and Mark Kozelek sounded clear and uncluttered.
The band's reverb-drenched instruments were often reminiscent to Neil Young and they had a strong tendency for covering classic rock songs. But Kozelek also had original material that wasn't always easily accessible. He covered John Denver’s “Take Me Home” and Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘I Am A Rock’ on the 1993 album Rollercoaster.
"Moments" is a more pastoral approach
The following album, "Ocean Beach", featured a more folk-influenced approach. There aren't the lengthy, droning epics that featured on their early albums, and there are more melodies, lyrical narratives and arrangements than ever before. It was the final album without Gorden Mack and saw Kozelek move to a more radio-friendly style. It featured more upbeat songwriting than 'Summer Dress' or 'San Geronimo', while the album's covers by Yes and Fleetwood Mac of Long Distance Runaround' are more relaxed.

Although the Red House Painters had previously covered many classic rock tracks, "Long Distance Runaround", was their first acoustic rendition. It's not the best cover, but it is a solid song. Kozelek comes out of his shell and gives more developed songs and melodies.
"Ocean Beach", a more introspective approach
Kozelek was more folk-influenced with Ocean Beach. The songs on Ocean Beach are shorter and more intimate than their early albums.
